WOULD FACEBOOK CLOSE INSTAGRAM? IT'S NOT AN IMPOSSIBLE IDEA!
On December 15, 2015 … I had a theory about Instagram … on March 16, 2016 my theory became truth when Instagram announced that they were rewriting their algorithm … I’m back, it’s January 5, 2019, and I have another theory … an idea … something to consider … what would happen if:
FACEBOOK SHUT DOWN INSTAGRAM
Are you all going: NO, they would never … it’s too popular! … so was Vine, and Twitter shut it down a couple of years ago …
HMMMM ...
Do you think the makers of Facebook want to have something they didn’t ‘create’ as the MOST POPULAR app and social media platform out there? In my opinion, the reasons that Facebook started all point to:
VERY LARGE EGOS
If anything about the movie Social Network is true (one of my favorite movies of all time) then Mark Zuckerberg didn’t only start Facebook because he thought the idea was killer … sure it was, and he did … but the original ‘reasons’ behind starting it were ‘revenge’ … were ‘being popular’ … were HIS EGO. OMG Heather, it’s a movie … not real life … ok, fine, even if you play that the movie was an exaggeration, which I agree, it most likely was, it couldn’t have been THAT FAR off base …
If a business is birthed by ego, it can be a great motivator … what happened when Instagram became too popular? Facebook bought it … ego or great business move or both? Probably both … but does Facebook really want people to like Instagram more than they like Facebook?
If you have been watching, Facebook is taking a lot of the things we love about Instagram and applying it to their firstborn … they are also taking a lot of things we hated about Facebook and applying it to Instagram … if my theory is true, about Facebook eventually shutting down Instagram, then they are making sure we don’t feel a big change when going between them … that we have bits we love about Facebook because of the reasons we love them on Instagram.
FACEBOOK AS AN UMBRELLA MAKES A SH*TLOAD OF MONEY OFF INSTAGRAM … THEY’D BE IDIOTS TO SHUT THAT DOWN
Sure … I like that argument … trust me, I don’t want Instagram to go away!! But, in my gut, I don’t believe that’s what drives the original ‘father’ of Facebook … he has money … plenty of it … if I’m right about ‘ego’ being the driving factor of the original ‘birth’ of Facebook, then it only works if Facebook is the most popular social media network around. And what makes that happen??
SHUTTING DOWN INSTAGRAM AND KEEPING PEOPLE ON FACEBOOK
Look, I want to be wrong … Most likely, I am ;) I’m wrong sometimes … haha … but I think the biggest thing we all need to remember is this:
YOU DON’T OWN THE SPACE YOU ARE MAKING POPULAR ON SOCIAL MEDIA
You don’t own one ounce of that space you are spending most of your time … Your Instagram feed, your followers, NONE OF IT is truly yours … I’ll repeat:
NONE OF IT IS YOURS.
If Facebook decides to close Instagram similarly to how Twitter closed Vine, then you can’t do sh*t about it … and what does that mean for business that comes directly off of Instagram? Argh …
I’m not trying to scare you, but us, as business owners, need to have more than one thing we use to bring in clients … if you are dependent on Instagram alone to attract your potential clients (like so many of us are) then you may be shooting yourself in the foot!
Social media is not dependable << honestly, it’s not. It’s helpful, makes you feel good, is a great way to reach people and share your work … but it is NOT DEPENDABLE!!!
I URGE YOU TO INVEST IN THE THINGS YOU HAVE CONTROL OVER!!!!
A few things come to mind … your relationships, your website, your blog, yourself … keep throwing efforts into social media, but don’t put all your eggs in that basket … even if I’m wrong ;)
