IF YOU HIRE A CREATIVE THAT YOU ADMIRE, LET THEM CREATE
It seems obvious, doesn’t it? You see someone creating amazing things, you want those things for yourself, you contact the creative who designed them, you hire them … shouldn’t the next step be:
TRUST THEM TO DO WHAT YOU HIRED THEM FOR.
If someone sees my work, my websites, and falls in LOVE with my vibe and my aesthetic … shouldn’t they then leave me to do just that? If you are a photographer and you have been hired because someone said to you: I’ve seen all your work and I absolutely LOVE IT!!! … shouldn’t your clients trust you to get the shots they already saw you took?
WHY SO OFTEN DO PEOPLE TRY TO CONTROL CREATIVITY?
I see it so much in my line of work … and I’ll be real honest: I absolutely hate it … and more then that??
IT STIFLES MY NATURAL AWESOMENESS TO DO WHAT I WAS HIRED TO DO!
Stifling someone’s creativity isn’t a gift to the person who hired them … in fact, it does the opposite. Take for example: websites … if you have always hated your website and you hire me to design your website because you love what I’ve made happen for my clients and you want that in your life … but then you micromanage the entire process … then you’ll end up having the same sh*tty website you have always had, it would just be me making it for you.
When people are amazing at what they do, it’s because THEY do it … I do what I do because it comes naturally to me …
I LOVE A GOOD COLLABORATION THOUGH!!
Here is what I do love … and I feel most creatives love … collaborating AFTER my initial ‘creative brain dump’ has happened. I’m all for my clients sharing their ideas and asking me to try something they thought of … but FIRST allow me to see what comes out of my brain …
If you are a creative who struggles with clients micromanaging your awesomeness, here is what I do with each client …
I gently ask them to ‘leave me alone’ in the beginning … LOL … obviously, I say it sweetly or I wouldn’t ever get hired … hahaha
I include in my contract ‘not to micromanage me’ in the beginning UNTIL I share my concept with them
While we are collaborating and sharing ideas back and forth about my initial concept, I still insert my thoughts and opinions while stating: in the end it’s your decision, but I recommend ‘this’
I never ever allow a client to steamroll my creativity … because in the end, my name goes on that product … and if the website doesn’t create success for my clients, I take that very seriously …
MY POINT?
If you hire someone you admire for your logo design or your website or your marketing materials … and you hired them because each and every thing they put out in the universe makes you drool??? LET THEM DO IT … just see what happens … and then, after they have done their thang, share your ideas and thoughts to make it perfect for you.
